About / Biography

The Brogues love to ceilidh - they’ve been doing it for years, and they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. And they’d love to help you with your next one. With a history of organising dances and concerts for visitors on the Isle of Skye (home for two of them), they’ve since moved further afield, and have been involved in leading events across the UK and beyond.

Active in writing their own tunes, the band’s sound is grounded in Scottish traditional folk music, with a modern feel. They’re a versatile bunch, though, adept at throwing in the odd fun quirk every now and then, and they’ll happily sing you a song or two (English or Gaelic) - just ask!

In days gone by, almost every township or village in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland would have had a ‘ceilidh house’ - a place where people felt welcome, and found good company. It was here that folk shared the gift of entertaining each other in song, dance and story. It’s a custom that’s made Scotland famous throughout the world, and it’s this kind of atmosphere that the Brogues seek to create wherever they go.

So whatever your event - big or small - get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. It would be our joy to help.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Parking spaces (1 for 2-piece band, 2 for 3-piece), mains power, 1 hour setup & soundcheck, 30-minute break for more than 2 hours of playing.

What information do you require about a venue?

We'll often liaise with a venue directly, to take some of the weight off a client's shoulders. We ask the venue staff which room we'll be in, which door we can load in and out of, where to put our cars, if there's a sound limiter, what time music needs to stop, and what time they need us to be packed up and out at the end of the night.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, everything is included in our quotes - PAT-tested sound equipment & disco lighting. We need access to mains power (via plug sockets or generator extensions).

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, absolutely! This service comes included in our price. We can use your playlists or our own, with folk/ceilidh tunes, classic DJ rock/pop/soul favourites, ambient/chilled background music... whatever the occasion requires.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try to be as flexible as we can to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. We know these things are subject to change, especially if the booking is made far in advance! So if your timings change slightly in the run up to the event, just let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

We played a wedding at Bob Dylan's private mansion in the Scottish Highlands! There was also a Halloween-themed wedding at the end of October one year - it was extra! The drinks coolers were coffins filled with ice, the balloons were coloured like eyeballs, there was a skeleton being passed around the dancefloor and signs all over saying "til death do us part"... wild.

What's your favourite type of event?

Any event where people are up for dancing and enjoying the music!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

The Brogues will be 10 years old in March 2025, but we've been ceilidhing in different bands for years before then, and playing live music for even longer. We've played 100+ weddings (plus birthday parties, anniversaries, balls, fundraisers, New Year's Eves/St Patrick's Days/Christmas parties...) across the UK, Ireland and beyond. We met in church!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Influences:
- Capercailie
- Cliar
- Duncan Chisholm
- Emily Smith
- Kathleen MacInnes
- Meantime
- Patsy Reid
- Runrig

Favourite artists:
- Grace (keys, vocals & calling): Aretha Franklin, Everly Brothers, The Chicks.
- Al (fiddle & vocals): Fleetwood Mac, John Mayer.
- Donal (drums, sound & calling): Frank Zappa, Slayer.

How far in advance should I contact you?

Anytime!

We can book dates into the diary 2+ years in advance, but we're also able to do last-minute elopements, and help couples who've been let down by their suppliers with less than a week to go!

Do you cover more than one wedding/event a day?

Yes! But we'll only do that if there's time to spare - we'd never risk letting down any of our clients.

Do you charge per hour or per event?

Per event.

How do you charge extra time?

£150 per hour extra for:
- Early setup (e.g. before dinner at a wedding)
- Finishing after 12am midnight
- If you only wanted 30mins extra, we would only charge the £75 - not the full hour.

Describe your typical process with a wedding couple.

Every couple is unique, so we get to know each new wedding differently. A couple will get in touch with their date & venue, and if we're available we'll provide a quote, outlining everything included in that price. We lay out a few different options like live first dance, DJ, covers set, early setup/late finish, ceremony and/or drinks reception music as well as any additional costs for these choices. We ask for our couples' budgets straight away, to give us the best chance of providing the best entertainment for their financial boundaries. All our quotes are individual; we include travel expenses and our musicians' fees change depending on the length & style of music requested. We offer a 2/3-piece band, but we can't always guarantee every line-up will be available for every date. For lower budget or smaller weddings, couples sometimes opt for the duo setup to lower costs, but we make sure to offer everything available to everyone!

What is your No.1 planning tip for wedding couples?

Don't panic! Ask for help from everyone. You've probably never organised a party this big before, nor are you likely to again - no one knows what they're doing the first time they plan a wedding, so just breathe.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

1 hour immediately before dancing starts to setup and soundcheck. Our performance times vary between clients!

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside but we ask for overhead cover in case of rain, a flat level surface to play on, and a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

For weddings, we'll happily play a live cover of the couple's first dance song (with at least 6 weeks' notice). We can sometimes learn the steps for calling a new ceilidh dance, or adapt our sets for a specific theme (e.g. Christmas ceilidh, Taylor Swift ceilidh). DJ requests are available in advance or on the night!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Fun, upbeat, great communication ahead of event. Every review we've ever had has been 4 or 5 stars - you can see examples of these on our profile!

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes! We can perform as a duo or trio. Our line-up depends on band availability.

Can you perform covers?

Yes, we can include some covers as part of our performance - see our song list for some examples. We provide both male & female vocals. We tend to recommend at least a 50/50 split for covers at a ceilidh, with perhaps a few more ceilidh dances to keep your guests happy!

Do you provide a caller?

Yes we do! We always have an experienced caller with us at ceilidhs to guide the dancing clearly & confidently, so you don't need to worry about finding one. You can see some examples of our calling in our videos.

What makes a romantic first dance?

Something that you've chosen together, that speaks to your relationship and gives you a chance to have a beautiful moment together with no interruptions. We can help you choose a song if you feel overwhelmed - we're like walking musical encyclopaedias, so we love providing this service for our couples.

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding/event?

There are so many! We've seen brides' dresses handmade by talented friends, Lord Of The Rings-inspired cursive writing throughout a venue, dogs being allowed as guests, multi-lingual disco playlists, child-friendly glow sticks in lieu of sparklers, golden hour photos... We love being a part of these beautiful occasions.
