For some reason the 70’s reached out and snatched Cognate Souls back like Sandman’s cane at the Apollo. We don’t know if it’s the draw of musical experimentation, the rebellious sentiment of self-exploration or the wonky lettering that captures the era so well, but that vibe largely influences our sound without losing modern relevance.
Cognate Souls blends soul, funk, pop and rock into an amalgamation that’s like dinner between Earth, Wind and Fire, Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz. As one person described, "Brother Man that was the making of a FUNK BABY! If Larry Graham, Prince, Sly Stone, Lenny Kravitz and Jimmy Hendrix got together and jammed this would have been it!" Our style is fun, raw and introspective while never losing sight of one central truth; we all create a better world together.
Cognate Souls formed as a group that represents it’s main mission, All Souls + One Root = One Sound. All of us are connected as one body and so the sound of music, the sound of love, should be one that uplifts and connects while never losing sight of joy in togetherness.
Originally formed pre-Covid by J. Kevin Powell, with some musicians from his church, the collective formed and released a few songs to play at RevFest in Marietta. As Covid hit, changes to the lineup were made forging this beautiful iteration, informed by our diverse heritage.
Cognate Soul’s music sits on a funk foundation and incorporates soul (of which funk is a subgenre), pop, rock, gospel, afro Cuban rhythms, Jazz, Hip Hop (old and new) and other multi-genre elements to create it’s psychedelic soul and soul pop sound. The live show is like having a band as your DJ, moving seamlessly between songs to keep the show lively, fun and interactive.
Cognate Souls can perform as a three to eight piece band.

Power, parking spaces for 5 cars if in Atlanta, GA, or a space big enough to fit an SUV and trailer if outside of Atlanta. We require performance space that includes multiple power
Please provide information regarding the performance area and power access. We can provide a haze machine, please let us know if that will create a problem with your smoke detectors. Room measurements may be helpful in advance so we can predetermine how to mix and create a level sound that isn't too loud for your venue.
Yes, we provide mixing and a PA. Additionally, we do have lighting available that can be scaled all the way up to two gig bars, par cans, haze machines and wash lighting.
We have a running playlist we use between our sets and play through the PA.
We did a great performance on the large stage at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta. It was a last minute fill in spot, but we had tons of energy while introducing ourselves to a new crowd who interacted with us, danced and sang along.
We love the type of events that are full of energy and are shows where people love to interact. Many of our songs have areas in our shows to interact with the crowd. We'll bring our energy either way, but we love those events where people are happy and bring their energy along for the ride. That makes it electric.
Cognate Souls started pre-Covid and then had to take the required break. After that period we started performing in Atlanta and surrounding states. Since then, we've usually play several times a month.
Cognate Souls blends soul, funk, pop and rock into an amalgamation that’s like dinner between Earth, Wind and Fire, Jimi Hendrix, Larry Graham, Curtis Mayfield, Sly Stone and Lenny Kravitz. We enjoy the rhythmic intricacies of The Meters, the versatility of Janet Jackson, the storytelling of Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder and the improvisational stylings of Weather Report, Umphrey's McGee, Ghost Note, STS9, Chick Corea and great fusion bands.
We usually arrive 2.5 hours before our performance. We can do anything from one 45 min set to three 45-60 mins sets.
We can play outside but need to be covered to protect our equipment and need power supply close to the performance area.
We have some flexibility in our play list, but we do mix our originals in with covers. Additionally, we limit the number of additional songs added to the list.
Clients describe us as high energy, a great mix of styles somehow pulled together with awesome musicianship that people want to stay around, listen to and interact with.
