About / Biography

David Delaney is a multi-instrumental wedding and event musician that has been performing and delighting wedding couples and guests throughout Ireland and South Africa since his early teens. He has travelled extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand as the lead performer for the Irish dance show "The Rhythms of Ireland", before relocating (unexpectedly) to South Africa in 2010. Not only does David perform violin and flute, but he also sings a range of Celtic and contemporary folks songs.
David specialises in Celtic violin and flute, but can also add a touch of light classical, jazz and Latin American grooves to get your wedding or event on the right track. Unsure about whether to hire an instrumentalist or a singer for that special event? You can have both, at one affordable price and setup!
I am available for travel to performances throughout South Africa, and potential for international placements. I look forward to planning the musical backdrop of your next event. Get in touch today at any of the contact details below.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Where AV equipment is hired in-house by the client, my Technical Rider should include

2 x XLR inputs
2 x DI/PreAmp (LR Baggs or similar)
1 x SM58 (or similar) and 1 x Microphone Stand
1 x Auxilary Cable to play Backtracks

My General Quote includes a Full PA system.

What information do you require about a venue?

Can I park close to the Entrance in order to bring in my Equipment?
Is there a Separate Supplier Entrance?

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, I am completely self-sufficient and provide all Sound Requirements for Events of 120 People of Less.
For bigger events, I am happy to speak with your Sound Coordinator or DJ to make sure all the Audio requirements are taken care of

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, if needed I can provide Background Music in-between sets using a YouTube Music Playlist.
Upon confirmation of Booking, the client is welcome to liaise with me to ensure that the right playlist is prepared

Do you bring your own Sound?

Yes - I have invested heavily in the best Sound System I can find. This includes Bose PA System and A Wireless Instrumental System to allow me to rove around your guests if you like

I already have a DJ booked. Can you use his or her Sound System?

Unfortunately not.
A DJ's sound system is very different to what is required for a sensitive instrument such as a Violin. I use very specific sound equipment that is tailored for string instruments. I would never compromise on the quality of the sound of my music at your event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

I have performed for both the Prime Minister of Jamaica and the President of Ireland over the course of my career.
I have also toured extensively across Australia and New Zealand performing as the Lead Musician in the Irish dance show "The Rhythms of Ireland"
Performing in the Crown Casino Melboure, Lyric Theatre Sydney and QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane have certainly been the highlights.

What's your favourite type of event?

Definitely a Wedding. The intimacy of the Ceremony, the joy of the Bridal Exit, and getting your party gently started with Upbeat Music on the Lawns for the Canapes - All before handing it over to the Band of DJ to take you to the next level.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I was born into a Musical Family. My Dad was a Singer and Entertainer and I grew up watching him perform, both Solo and with various Bands. By the age of 14, I had built up the Repertoire (and Bar Manager's permissions) to perform alongside him on weekends. From my first gig with my Dad in 1997, I've never looked back.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Having grown up in Ireland, I am a huge fan of Traditional Irish Music.
I grew up listening to bands such as The Chieftains, Altan, Dervish, Solas and Lunasa.
I also enjoyed the Gypsy Jazz music of legends such as Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli.
My favourite Violinist is Siobhan Peoples (Ireland) and my current favourite band(s) are "Talisk", "Imar", while locally in SA, I enjoy the music of MiCasa and the Amapiano movement

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Flexible to each Client's Requirements.
Fatherhood has trained me so that early morning Setups or Performances are not a problem.
Complete Battery-Powered PA is provided as standard, so that you can have entertainment wherever you would like, regardless of power sources or loadshedding

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, I am more than happy
All I ask, is that there is some element of shade, such as an umbrella or canopy provided, to protect me from harsh sun.
My PA system is completely battery-powered. Therefore I can be placed anywhere in your venue.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

While I have a general setlist - I make provision for the Client to pick One Song or Piece of their choosing.
I will then go away, learn and prepare a piece.
This could be a "Bridal Entrance",. "Engagement Proposal Song" or a Special Request for that Significant Person in your life.
If a song can be recreated on a Violin, and you love it - I will accept the challenge to perform it especially for you.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"performance was top class. The selection of your music was excellent."
"recommend his services and his professionalism"
"he is professional in his work ethic and it was effortless working with him."
