About / Biography

Irish. Punk. Folk. Rock. Trad. Why not have it all? Double Shot Maggie's irresitible style is hard to define, but one thing is sure: this powerhouse of a band will put a big smile on every face in the house. Blending traditional and rock instruments into a foot-stomping good time, Double Shot Maggie is a 5-piece band that will have you on your feet before you know it , serving up familiar songs, delivered in ways you didn't think possible.

All band members are talented multi-instrumentalists: Double Shot Maggie's musical arsenal covers the usual rock instruments, plus accordion, banjo, mandolin, Irish bouzouki - even bagpipes have been known to make an appearance from time to time. Double Shot Maggie's music is a high powered fusion of traditional Irish and contemporary Celtic tunes, with the result being fast-paced, extremely danceable good times trad punk.

As seasoned performing musicians individually, the band formed in 2023 and quickly became sought-after to play at pubs, festivals and corporate events in Geelong, Melbourne and elsewhere in Australia, and as a must-have band during the St. Patrick's Day season (of course!).

Old tunes and new tunes alike: nothing is sacred, Double Shot Maggie takes your favourites and hurls them back at you with fierce, fun energy. You’ll be talking about this band long after you’ve got your voice back.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

We need a stage or floor area large enough to accommodate 5 band members, with drums, amplifiers etc in there too. Standard 240V power, preferably with multiple outlets, is essential.

What information do you require about a venue?

Knowing whether or not a venue has its own sound system / mixer / foldbacks will help us plan what we need to bring and how we might set up. Being aware of any venue quirks is also really helpful (do you have a trapdoor in the middle of the stage that you'll need to access to change kegs during our performance? That sort of stuff is pretty important. )

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We are completely self-sufficient for sound equipment and can arrange lighting for an additional fee if required.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can easily push Spotify playlists through your (or our) PA in between our sets. For an additional fee, we can also provide "wandering accordion" background music if your event has a meet & greet period and you'd like to start it out cute and mellow. Don't worry, we'll ramp it up with the full band when the time is right.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

We regularly perform to packed pubs, some particularly memorable ones include playing to a full house of visiting Gaelic football teams; providing all-night entertainment for corporate birthday celebrations for a large Irish-founded international company, and playing at the Koroit Irish Festival in a tent that was overflowing with energetic punters who knew every word to every song!

What's your favourite type of event?

We love playing venues where there's a real appetite for dancing and singing along with us!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Each of the five band members are experienced in other bands and in many styles of music - some are also solo artists in their own right. Double Shot Maggie was formed when two of us realised we shared a real love of Irish folk style, and we wanted to bring more of that to everyday audiences. We've been incredibly fortunate to have found such wonderfully complementary musicians to complete the band. We started gigging locally in the lead up to St. Patrick's Day and quickly found that there was strong appetite for our style of music.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

With 5 of us in the band, our individual influences are many and varied - our tastes include everything from Country Rock to Death Metal, medieval folk to eastern European polka music, 80's indie to 30's crooners, and dark Americana to shanty punk! Greatest song of all time - that's a hard one! For us, the song that we absolutely love to play is a very, very old Irish traditional tune called "Frost is all Over", we absolutely adore bringing it to new audiences and breathing new life into it.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We can be set up and soundchecked within around 45minutes. We typically play 3 x 45-50minute sets with 15-20minute breaks between.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We're happy to perform outside but it does need to be undercover to deal with rain and/or baking sun.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We develop our own setlists but will consider any special requests from clients, provided the requested song fits with our musical style, and with sufficient lead time for us to do the song justice. We don't take audience requests.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients have loved us (and still do). We are regularly asked back - many of our performances are repeat enagements and we have formed great friendships with many clients. Our clients are delighted with our energy, or flexibility and the way we put smiles on audiences' faces!
