BIOGRAPHY

Specialising in the songs you know and love from the last 6 decades, Duke Vox are sure to impress. Audiences can expect to hear many of their favourite songs ranging from The Kinks to George Ezra, with a surprisingly fuller sound than expected from just two key performers.

The act is fronted by Stu Johns, an experienced singer and pianist, who has performed weekly as a soloist and also in a number of different musical acts around Perth for over 20 years. Stu is a classically trained pianist, with a strong and versatile singing voice, able to perform various genres including rock, blues, ballads, pop, and swing. By providing vocals, as well as a range of sounds with up to 2 keyboards, Stu has proven he can deliver at all event styles.

Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, percussion and backing vocals are all provided by Rene Tostevin, who has performed at pubs, weddings, corporate and private functions in Australia for 30 years. Some of Rene’s most notable gigs include the NRL Nines 2020 pre-game show at HBF Park and NYE on the Foreshore festival at Ozone Reserve in 2016.

Rene’s choice to make cover songs “his own” results in a sometimes soothing, sometimes punchy, but always rich sound. Rene can bring a crowd to sing along with tailored versions of any rock hit, or modernised classic.

Duke Vox take pride in providing Multiple Performance Offerings to our customers, ensuring that each event receives the perfect music choice and ambience.

Duke Vox was established in 2020, however Rene and Stu have played together on an ad-hoc basis, for a further 10 years prior. Because of their live experience, they each deliver a professional performance, with a relaxed approach. Duke Vox are a top choice for cafés, private functions, weddings, community events and pubs.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Our stage (or performance space) requirements are an area of 4.5m (w) x 3m (d), with 1x power point available.

If the PA system is provided by the client/others, we require 3x DI boxes and 2x vocal microphones (on Boom Stands) on stage for the band to use.

What information do you require about a venue?

We simply need to confirm the full address and that there is a power point (with clean power) within 10m from the band's performance area.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, DUKE VOX are completely self contained. We have 3 different options for PA systems that we include for our gigs.

On request, we also provide a spare microphone and stand for client use with speeches, etc...

For evening events, we also offer lighting to suit the stage and dancefloor.

Our PA system and lighting offerings are tailored to suit each specific booking, taking in to account things like expected audience capacity, room shape, etc...

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, prior to each booking, DUKE VOX prepare background music to be used before/after and in between our sets. We can also usually accomodate last minute requests during the event. If the customer would prefer to provide their own music playlist, or their own music, we can usually accomodate this too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

We were booked by the West Coast Eagles football club, to perform for Tevor Nisbett's retirement party, which was held at Subiaco Oval Pavilion (the previous home of WCE). It was amazing to perform for a lot of our sporting heros and see some of the club's previous members all celebrate Trevor's 35 year tennancy with WCE.

What's your favourite type of event?

We love playing at all sorts of events but birthday parties and End-of-Year parties are probably our favourites! The guests are always happy and it’s easy to get them dancing.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

The act is fronted by Stu Johns, an experienced singer and pianist, who has performed weekly as a soloist and also in a number of different musical acts around Perth for over 20 years. Stu is a classically trained pianist, with a strong and versatile singing voice, able to perform various genres including rock, blues, ballads, pop, and swing. Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, percussion and backing vocals are all provided by Rene Tostevin, who has performed at pubs, weddings, corporate and private functions in Australia for over 30 years. Some of Rene’s most notable gigs include the NRL Nines 2020 pre-game show at HBF Park and NYE on the Foreshore festival at Ozone Reserve in 2016.

Stu and Rene have performed well over 150 gigs together, as Duke Vox or in other formats.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

This is incredibly hard for us to answer, as we cater to a large demographic and broad musical style. We would probably have to say we are influenced mostly by the likes of The Beatles, INXS, Fleetwood Mac and Cold Chisel, with either The Beatles or Fleetwood Mac being our absolute favourite. The greatest song of all time would have to be I Am The Walrus.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Depending on the booking type, we normally arrive 1-2 hours before the performance to set up. We normally perform 3-4x 45 minute sets. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside but we ask for protection from the sun/rain/wind, a flat level surface and a power supply within 10m of the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Upon prior negotiation, we can usually learn a few specific songs before the event. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Our previous client comments include desribing comments like "professional", "impressive" and "talented", while the general consesnses is usually that Duke Vox knew exactly what they wanted from the band.

Do you do any themed events?

Yes, DUKE VOX do an "Aussie Favourites" performance, as well as a "Best of the Brits!" performance, showcasing music from each of these places.
