The Funky Pineapples, based in London, are inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition, also incorporating influences from other cultures and styles – swing, Latin, ska, reggae, gospel, funk, blues... This is all tied together with top class musicianship and a sense fun, giving the band its own unique sound. The band was formed in 2007, and from the outset the focus was on spontaneity, energy, interaction and joy. He has collected together a group of leading jazz musicians who can respond to what each other plays in the moment and infuse the songs with the magic of the moment!
The repertoire is drawn from classic New Orleans songs, as well as numbers composed by members of the band and songs taken from other genres. With vocals from the band, backing riffs created in the moment and improvised solos, each song is given its own personal twist. The band isn't an out and out cover band, but they can perform some pop cover songs.
They regularly appear at Ronnie Scott's famous club in London, as well as appearing up and down the land at festivals, clubs, arts centres, and parties for any occasion.
The band can perform as an acoustic line-up, accompanying drinks on the lawn, or leading a parade, or with PA for dancing. The preferred line-up is a six-piece, or seven for a really punchy parade band, but the band can perform as a five piece for some events.
WE ALSO HAVE A NUMBER OF ORIGINAL SONGS, AND CAN PLAY DOZENS OF OTHER TRADITIONAL NEW ORLEANS SONGS AND JAZZ STANDARDS.

Our favourite gigs are those where the audience is loving our music. It doesn't matter if it's a 'big gig' or playing in a back garden. We love playing for happy people. We've played at Ronnie Scott's in London, for the London 2012 Olympics, for Chelsea Flower Show, various arts centres, festivals and such.
Playing for happy people.
We are all professional jazz musicians, playing with many bands, around the UK and internationally. We love getting together to play as a band.
We are inspired by the brass bands of New Orleans (Dirty Dozen, Hot Eight, Rebirth and such) but we have our own take on the genre. Any great song can be destroyed by a bad band, and many unusual songs can just hit the spot when they are right for the occasion.
Yes, I make my living performing as a jazz musician, sometimes as a featured artist, or with various bands. I like to entertain people, and I play styles of jazz that people enjoy. I play with some of the leading jazz musicians in the UK.
We generally aim to arrive 60 minutes before our performance. Set up for an acoustic set takes 5 minutes. If PA is required then this takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Yes, although shelter would be required if it is raining, and shade if there is scorching sunshine.
If you have particular requests you are welcome to ask. Some songs are not suitable, or would require a lot of time to be spent transcribing and arranging.
“...You are all such talented, wonderful musicians individually in your own rights, but the chemistry was fantastic. It felt like we had experienced something very special and unique. The playfulness and sense of enjoyment and fun was contagious…
Helen Cundy, Arts Centre Director, Ashcroft Arts Centre”
“I have seen you guys twice in London and loved it each time- you can't have a bad day with music like that!… Sheona Alexander”
“I can't put into words how much I enjoyed your set at Ronnie Scot's last night. It was my first time there, and you guys made it a fantastic experience. I look forward to coming to any future gigs that you play. Absolutely cracking band. Cheers, Joe.”
