About / Biography

Boogie the night away with The Groovy Funky Things, the ultimate celebration of floor-filler funk, soul, and disco classics.

The Groovy Funky Things perform songs from musical legends including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Whitney Huston, Sister Sledge, Chic, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and Earth Wind & Fire. Comprising five outstanding musicians, The GFTs bring you dance floor hit after dance floor hit from a golden age of transatlantic music. In addition to our classic offering, we can also include more recent dance oriented material from artists like Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Daft Punk, and Spiller.

Whether performing a public show or entertaining guests at a private function, The Groovy Funky Things have a well-deserved reputation for filling dance floors and keeping happy partygoers on their feet song after song.

We normally expect to perform up to 2 hours of live music, but we are happy to provide recorded music before, between and after our live sets. Our normal service period is between 6.00pm (arrival/setup/sound check) and midnight (all music, including recorded music, ceases).

The Groovy Funky Things is a self contained 5 piece band with PA and lighting equipment suitable for indoor gatherings of up to 200 guests or rooms up to approximately 300 square metres in size.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

The venue and stage area should be accessible for at least an hour prior to performance time. Vehicular access is essential. The stage area should be at least 6 metres x 4 metres, this includes space for speakers and lighting equipment. We require a minimum of two separate thirteen amp mains sockets, preferably one at each side of the stage area. These should be accessible without needing to run cables across fire exits or access ways.

What information do you require about a venue?

In order to ensure good preparation for your event, we will need the details of your contact at the venue. We can then liaise directly with them.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, we’re completely self contained and carry PA and lighting equipment suitable for functions of up to 250 people or 300 square metres. However, if your event is larger, we can easily hire in suitable equipment.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We are happy to play recorded music before, between and after our sets, and we would be happy to include a client playlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

Our favourite recent gig was on the main stage at the Camper Jam festival at Weston Park. A fantastic audience who danced the evening away, despite the rain.

What's your favourite type of event?

Our music celebrates dance floor classics, so any event where guests are up for a good time. There’s nothing more gratifying than a full dance floor.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Although The GFTs is a relevantly recent venture, we’re all seasoned musicians with decades of gigging experience between us. All of us have a history of performing for weddings and corporate functions, in some cases going back to the mid 90s.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Our biggest influences are major funk, soul and disco artists from the 70s and 80s. Names like Michael Jackson, Whitney Huston, Stevie Wonder, Chic, Sister Sledge, Earth Wind & Fire, and Donna Summer are our most obvious influences.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We need a minimum of an hour to set up and soundcheck, although longer is always preferable. Our typical schedule would be a 6.00pm arrival for an 8.00pm or later start, giving us time to settle and to eat after travelling and setup. We normally play for a maximum of two hours, which can be divided into two one hour or three 40 minute sets, at the discretion of the client. We like to have a minimum of 20 minute break between sets, and we like to be finished and packing down by midnight. However, ultimately, we like to be flexible and work around the client’s requirements for the event.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to perform outside provided that the stage area, including all space where electrical equipment will be used, is covered! British weather is unpredictable at the best of times and electrical equipment and rain simply don’t mix! We also require an adequate power supply provided on the stage: a long 13 amp extension lead running from a single domestic mains socket really won’t be adequate.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We normally only play from our repertoire, from which clients are welcome to choose songs. However, for weddings, we realise that first dance requests are all part of the big day. Provided we have adequate notice, i.e. at the time of booking, we’ll do our best to provide a custom arrangement.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Our shows have been described as ‘dance til you drop’.
