About / Biography

Ian became hooked on jazz guitar when he first heard Wes Montgomery play ‘Round Midnight’ – he’s been playing in Jazz and ‘Roots’ bands ever since. Noted for his smooth melodic style he is at home playing Bossa nova, swingin jazz and funky blues, when the mood is right. As a soloist, Ian shares his musical ideas on some great mid century jazz and bossa nova tunes (e.g. Body and Soul, Corcovado). His skill on solo guitar creates a laid back ambience, perfect for any sophisticated event such as pre wedding, greeting event or similar.

The 4 or 5 piece combo plays smooth versions of some Sinatra tunes and other swinging evergreens while featuring excellent musicianship from top players. The band (AKA. Hot Bossa Combo) guarantees a classy vibe at your wedding, restuarant or club. The ensemble's lineup of Vocals, Drums, Double bass and Guitar may also include a saxophone, when the budget allows.

Promising a 'customer-friendly' service, we would love to assist you in creating a wonderful celebration or party!

Technical Info

Customers are often worried that solo guitar or jazz combo will be too loud for a quieter event.

I like to assure potential customers that the band will always try to meet the requirements of the event and ensure the decibel level is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

There are many memorable performances that I could mention. Eg. Playing with great musicians such as Vince Jone and Eric Marienthal . Other gigs of note might include - Organising a trio and performance at the Old Melbourne Gaol for a Christmas celebration of the Melbourne law society. As a member of the 'Kit cat club' (roots and jazz band)- we performed at many celebrity 'after parties ' and festivals.

What's your favourite type of event?

When playing solo I enjoy the listeners who tune in to each piece - I also enjoy the fact that I can respond to the ambience and maybe enhance the atmosphere.
As a band leader and and guitar player I love playing at all sorts of events but weddings are golden. The guests are always happy and it's easy to create a party vibe.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started playing guitar at about 12 and formed a group at 15 whose first gig was in a big hay shed in Flowerdale, Victoria. Music studies at Melbourne Uni broadened my knowledge of music and gave me the chance to be involved with ensembles at a high level. Studies with Don Andrews and George Golla in Sydney developed improvising skills as well as focus on the guitar as a solo instrument ( which I very much enjoy). My other joy is arranging and organising gigs with Melbourne's top players.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I/web normally arrive 1 hour before the performance to set up. Normally it's 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets. Myself and the combo are usually happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best."

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area."

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We can learn specific songs before the event but we usually limit this to 3 songs. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them."

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers have described my solo guitar playing as 'beautiful', 'jazzy but accessible'. Vince Jones once described me as a 'Chops master' The combo gigs have always gained strong audience involvement with clients using superlatives such ' Most enjoyable' and a 'Top notch band'.
