About / Biography

“music inspired by tradition”

Music is Blues, Jazz, Swing, Dance, Rock, Bluegrass to Zydeco. I have many originals as well.

Great entertainer, not just a show but being part of the sights, sounds and artistry. Sung to, you will be caught up in the music and vibe.

I started in 1970 being discovered and produced by MR B B King. Touring was a way of life for 55+ years. I have owned a successful recording studio, music company, music publishing and record labels. I was a Featured Artist for Hohner USA for 20+ years. I have worked with many of the great artists over the years. Opening for the Allman Brothers first tour as well as Taj Mahal. Performing with Buddy Guy and Mat "Guitar" Murphy and one of my all time favorites Commander Cody and The Lost Planet Airmen, as will Ray Charles, John Hartford and Leon Russell.. Zydeco greats Boozoo Chavis, Beau Jocque, Steve Riley and The Mamou Playboys, Wayne Toups and many more.

Here's a few of my favorite press quotes;

Mr. B. B. King said of him “This guy is marvelous. He has a rare talent”.

“solid blues.. good shuffles.. good harp tone.. the whole band plays with good energy.. a lot of verve and energy”

Bruce Iglauer Alligator Records and Artist Management

“…like a semi parting the water on a city street. You can’t stop it. You just stand there and listen to this powerhouse on wheels.”

Ben Onmart

Walla Walla Washington’s Blues News says “Malkum is one of today’s best harp players whose lyrical phrasing and unique style set him apart from the pack.”

“….one that should please any fan of the old masters of the blues.”

JLE

Dirty Linen Magazine

“Harp, guitar, broken hearts and cheating lovers”, is how Texas Blues Magazine describes Malkum’s style of blues.

“…….energy-packed performance……will move and excite you like no other, electrifying performer.”

“The folk-blues tradition lives in Malkum Gibson”

Ed Levy

Blue Revue Magazine

Rated ****

“…..soild, technically proficient and musically adept presence

……passionate harmonica….that would give Sonny Terry a run for his money”. A longtime vet of the music scene, Malkum does an excellent job on harp and accordion, and his vocals are both playful and soulful.

Bill Kisliuk

Blues Access Magazine

From A. Grigg, Blues Bytes - Graham Clarke, June, 20 2007:

Touring became a way of life playing and performing with the best bluesmen from opening up for the Allman Brothers first tour at Cincinnati’s Ohio’s Ludlow Garage and Taj Mahal’s first tour at Kelly Hall in Yellow Springs Ohio to performing with Guy Davis on tour in Ireland. From coast to coast, north to south and several tours overseas; one thing rings clear, “music inspired by tradition” and the tradition is BLUES! “so he is truly one of the White Blues Pioneers in the U.S.A. But, besides his pioneering, Malkum is probably the only Bluesman in the World who had his debut recording produced by B.B. King!” Malkum's harp sound is unique; he sounds like a cross between Junior Wells (1950s), James Cotton and Snooky Pryor with those high clear notes. His many years as an acoustic harp man show through with the occasional Sonny Terry-like melodic passages. He's got more stuff in his bag-of-tricks/styles than just about anyone else on today's scene. Malkum's harmonica work is enough to prove he's one of North American's Top Ten.
Malkum is one of the better vocalists out there too, so the main Achilles heel' for White bands is not an issue at all.

“This is foot-stomping, knee-slapping blues.”
