Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

The best gig I have ever done has to be when I played at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club. My band The Matt Telfer Quartet were the main act for that evening.

What's your favourite type of event?

I love all events! Any excuse to play the saxophone!!!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

My gigging career began over 25 years ago when I started performing with a soul band across the UK. This experience was where I honed my craft. From there, I transitioned into becoming a professional jazz musician and music producer.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Gil Scott-Heron, John Coltrane, and Bruce Lee are the reasons I play the saxophone. Bruce Lee might seem like an unusual influence, but his sheer dedication to training deeply impacted how I approached my practice, helping me to develop my skills. After seeing Gil Scott-Heron perform at Ronnie Scott's, I made the decision to become a professional musician. John Coltrane's music guided me through the tough times on my musical journey.
