Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Our band's technical requirements depend on the size of your event and the venue. Typically, we need access to a power outlet and adequate space for the band to set up their instruments. For smaller, more intimate events, our bands can play acoustically. For larger venues or outdoor events, additional sound equipment like speakers and microphones may be required, which we can coordinate to ensure everything runs smoothly. If your venue has its own sound system, we’re happy to talk about how to integrate with it.

We kindly ask that parking or loading bays be available for loading in and out. Musician set breaks are worked into the performance ahead of time, to ensure the flow of your event is uninterrupted. For longer events, a light meal is appreciated, and we can discuss this in advance. Feel free to contact us for specific advice based on your event’s needs.

What information do you require about a venue?

Information that our team will need from your venue includes directions to the venue, including any specific details to help us locate the best spot for unloading our equipment. Information about parking availability near the loading area is also helpful.

Additionally, it’s important for us to know if the venue has any sound restrictions, such as a sound limiter or specific noise ordinances. If your venue has its own sound system, we’d appreciate knowing the setup details in advance so we can coordinate with the on-site team if needed.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We can coordinate and provide sound gear including
- PA System (speakers, subwoofers, amplifiers and mixers)
- Microphones
- Cables, leads and stands

At this stage we cannot provide lighting equipment. Feel free to contact us for specific advice based on your event’s needs, and we can advise accordingly.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we’re happy to play music from a pre-approved Spotify playlist before, after and between our sets. We’re happy to choose the music ourselves or let the client choose the music. If you would like to choose the tracks, please email our team a link or access to your own playlist. Please send us this information at least 7 days before the date of your event.

What is the booking process like?

Seamless booking is essential. This is why the most crucial part of our process is consultation. These discussions allow us to deeply understand your needs and preferences.

Typical Booking Process:
1. Submit and enquiry to our team.
2. Initial Consultation. Discuss event feel, expectations, requirements, logistic questions, budget.
3. Follow-up Discussion. Confirm band size, performance times, song choices, and any specifics.
4. Check musician availability.
5. Confirmation of availability for event date, time and address.
6. Receive and confirm Quote.
7. Receive Two Invoices. The 50% Deposit to secure your band, and the remainder due 3 weeks prior to event date.
8. Payment 1 - 50% Deposit due to secure date.
9. Specifics Discussion. May include site viewing, set-list completion and reviewing event run sheet.
10. Payment 2 - 50% remainder due 3 weeks prior to event date.
11. Performance setup and soundcheck on event date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

All our band members have played so many brilliant gigs, it is hard to name just one.

What's your favourite type of event?

Our favourite type of event is one where the guests are fully immersed in the music! Whether it's an intimate wedding or a lively award night, we love events where our jazz creates the perfect atmosphere.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Our band members have years of experience performing at various events and venues in Perth. Many began gigging by playing at local jazz clubs like The Ellington Jazz Club on Beaufort St. Coming together for Metro Music, this experience allowed each of us to hone our craft and build a strong rapport with audiences. Now, we are expanding our reach and performing at weddings, corporate events, and birthday celebrations.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Our bands are deeply influenced by the rich legacy of old-school jazz, especially the powerful sounds of 1950s big bands. Many of our musicians are particularly fond of Count Basie Orchestra. We often draw inspiration from his timeless 'Chairman of the Board' album, which features smooth arrangements and dynamic swing. It is very hard to choose a favourite artist, but Basie's ability to combine sophistication and drive stands out.

When it comes to the greatest song of all time, Duke Ellington's Take the "A" Train is a classic that embodies the spirit of jazz—elegant, vibrant, and full of life.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Our band's setup schedule depends heavily on the event size, band size, venue size, and AV complexity. If you have any questions regarding setup, this will be discussed in detail after our coordinators understand your event needs. We rarely charge additional fees for setups, and only in cases of complex requirements.

A typical performance includes 3 hours of playing, setup/soundcheck and packdown. We have found that the following set configurations suit us and our audiences best...

Option 1 - 4 x 45 minute sets (15 minute breaks between each set)
Option 2 - 3 x 60 minute sets (One 15 minute break and one 30 minute break)

If you require customised set times, including fewer or more performance hours, we will accommodate for this in your quote.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, our bands can absolutely accommodate playing outdoors. In these situations, we require shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Yes, you can choose songs for the band to play! Our musicians can learn specific songs before the event, however we usually limit this to 5 songs, as we may need to source sheet music for each musician. You are also welcome to select a set list from our extensive repertoire, or if you prefer, you can let us choose the music for you.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Many of our previous clients describe Metro Music performances as charming and unforgettable. They commend our musicians for being very well-versed in jazz, showing deep respect for the genre and the event atmosphere. Clients appreciate our professionalism and how we tailor our music to enhance the mood, creating an inviting experience that leaves a lasting impression on their guests
