Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

As a solo violinist, some of my most memorable gigs have been those where the audience was deeply engaged, and the atmosphere was truly magical. One of the best gigs I’ve ever performed at was a high-profile event where I collaborated with a diverse group of musicians, blending classical and world music in a way that left a lasting impact on both the audience and myself.

The best venue I’ve worked at would have to be the Royal Albert Hall—its breathtaking acoustics, grandeur, and historical significance made it an unforgettable experience. However, I also cherish performing at more intimate venues where I can connect closely with the audience and create a truly personal musical experience.

What's your favourite type of event?

My favorite type of event is one where I can truly connect with the audience and create a memorable atmosphere. Whether it's an elegant wedding, an intimate private party, or a prestigious concert hall performance, I love events where the music enhances the emotions of the moment. I particularly enjoy collaborative performances with other musicians and unique settings where I can blend different styles, from classical to fusion and world music.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I began my journey as a violinist at a young age, developing my skills through formal training and countless hours of practice. After graduating from the Royal College of Music, I started gigging by participating in local performances and collaborating with fellow musicians.

My early experiences included playing in chamber music ensembles and orchestras, which helped me gain confidence and versatility. I quickly expanded into session work, where I collaborated across various genres, including classical, fusion, folk, and world music. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to perform at prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre, and I’ve worked with a wide range of artists and bands, further enriching my experience.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I’ve been influenced by a diverse range of artists across various genres. Some of the most significant influences include Yehudi Menuhin for his incredible technique and emotive playing, Itzhak Perlman for his passion and charisma, and Lindsey Stirling for her innovative fusion of classical and modern styles.

My favorite artist is Yo-Yo Ma, whose ability to transcend genres and connect with audiences on an emotional level inspires me. His performances often showcase the beauty of classical music while embracing other musical traditions.

As for the greatest song of all time, it's hard to choose just one, but “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve stands out for its powerful melody and thought-provoking lyrics. Its blend of orchestral elements with modern rock truly resonates with me.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Setup Time:
I usually require 30 to 45 minutes for setup, which includes tuning my violin, arranging any necessary equipment, and conducting a soundcheck to ensure everything is perfect for the performance.
Performance Duration:
For most events, I perform for about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the requirements of the event. This can be divided into sets, such as two 45-minute sets with a break in between or a continuous 60-minute performance.
Arrival Time:
I prefer to arrive at the venue at least an hour before the scheduled performance time to accommodate any unforeseen circumstances and to ensure a smooth experience for both myself and the event organisers.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, I am happy to perform outside! Outdoor events can create a wonderful atmosphere, allowing the music to blend beautifully with the natural surroundings. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind to ensure a successful performance:

Weather Conditions: I prefer a sheltered area to protect against rain or extreme sun, as weather can impact both my performance and the violin.
Sound Setup: I ensure that the sound system is suitable for outdoor acoustics and that there are power sources available if needed.
Space: A flat, stable surface for my performance area is essential for both safety and sound quality.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I believe in creating a personalized experience for each event, so I welcome client input on the music selection. While I have a set repertoire list that includes a range of classical pieces, folk tunes, and contemporary songs, I encourage clients to share their preferences or specific requests.

This collaboration allows me to tailor the performance to match the event’s theme and the audience's tastes, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone. If clients have particular songs or styles in mind, I’m more than happy to incorporate those into my performance!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients most commonly describe my performances as engaging, emotive, and captivating. They often appreciate my ability to connect with the audience, creating a unique atmosphere that enhances the overall experience of their event. Many highlight my versatility in performing a wide range of styles, from classical to folk and fusion, which adds a dynamic element to the performance.

Clients also frequently mention the high quality of sound and my professionalism in setup and execution, noting how seamless the entire experience is from start to finish.
