Philip Nikwé

Chanteur et pianiste, compositeur et producteur, Philip Nikwé est né à Cotonou (Bénin). Il s’installe à Paris pour poursuivre ses études universitaires et commence très vite à se produire dans des groupes et avec divers artistes comme Pierre Akendengue, Radiah Frye, Zao, Angélique Kidjo, écrivant et produisant pour eux. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme universitaire et travaillé dans l'industrie de la publicité et du graphisme, il quitte son emploi de jour pour se consacrer à la musique à plein temps. Il a également écrit et produit des bandes originales de films comme Quartier Mozart de Jean-Pierre Bekolo 1995.

Il fait partie d’une génération de musiciens africains, qui a intégré à sa musique diverses influences — en particulier le R&B, le Funk et la Pop, avec un vrai goût pour les mélodies et un sens profond des rhythmiques dance hip hop et surtout l’afrobeat de Fela qu’il a rencontré à Cotonou dans la discothèque que tenait son père dans les années 70 ( Le Beach Club ). En conséquence, sa musique ne peut être classée comme World Music, car Philip n’a pas été élevé dans les traditions à l’instar des Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour ou Mory Kanté.

Le premier instrument qu’il ait jamais touché était un piano. Bien qu’il aime bien jouer à d’autres instruments, le piano reste au centre de son jeu et de sa composition. De ce fait, la musique de Philip Nikwé peut être labellisée comme étant universelle.

Philip Nikwé

Singer, pianist, composer and producer Philip Nikwé was born in Cotonou (Benin). He moved to Paris to pursue his university studies and soon began performing in groups and with various artists such as Pierre Akendengue, Radiah Frye, Zao and Angélique Kidjo, writing and producing for them. After graduating from university and working in the advertising and graphics industry, he quit his day job to devote himself to music full-time. He has also written and produced soundtracks for films such as Jean-Pierre Bekolo's Quartier Mozart 1995.

He belongs to a generation of African musicians who have integrated a variety of influences into their music - in particular R&B, funk and pop, with a real taste for melody and a deep sense of hip hop dance rhythms and, above all, the afrobeat of Fela, whom he met in Cotonou in the nightclub run by his father in the 1970s (Le Beach Club). As a result, his music cannot be classified as World Music, because Philip was not brought up in the traditions of the likes of Salif Keita, Youssou N'Dour or Mory Kanté.
