About / Biography

Robert Mitchell is a traditional bagpiper for all occasions.

Bob is recognized as a successful solo competitor in the U.S., Canada, and Scotland. He is also an accomplished studio musician with over thirty years experience performing extensively throughout the Washington, D.C., Baltimore areas, and nationally, playing the Great Highland Bagpipes and the Scottish Small Pipes.

Bob worked for more than twenty years at the Maryland Reniassance Festival in Crownsville, Maryland as the wandering piper entertaining generations of visitors. He was also the Founder and Piper Major of Dunloggin Pipes and Drums Band for 25 years and played with the Pan-Celtic Folk Band IONA for 8 years.

Currently, Bob is performing professionally at church services, including weddings and funerals. He continues to study the Art of small piping, which involves playing the small pipes along with other folk instruments. As an instructor, Bob has taught at several workshops and summer piping schools. He is a retired public school special education instructor. He is currently a guest musician with the Richmond Symphony, performing Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise.

What's your favourite type of event?

My favorite type of gig is a small church service where I play Prelude, processional, hymns, and postlude on Scottish small pipes.


What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I played 20 years at the Maryland Renaissance Festival between 1976- 1996; processionals, stage shows, dances, weddings and busking.


Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

GS MacLellan, John MacDonald, AC/DC, just kidding.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I arrive on site 45 min. before a performance to check in, review the music with client, change to Scottish attire, tune instruments.


Are you happy to perform outside?

I perform mostly outdoors. However, I play the small pipes indoors.


Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I am happy to send my current set lists out to clients. Almost everything I play can be found on YouTube.

I have over 200 reviews on line, all are fantastic. I am happy to share my reviews with my clients before hiring me.
