I have had some gigs where the client just wants a short "2nd Line" type of feel to kick off an event. This might only be 15 minutes of playing. I'm happy to discuss cost depending on location. | $550 (USD) |
There have been gigs where the client just wants that smokey speakeasy feel where I walk around playing saxophone for 1 hour without any backing tracks or PA. I'm able to give the guests a unique experience with a creative flair. | $500 (USD) |
I have a PA system where I can play backing tracks (while I play the lead part on sax) to a ton of popular jazz standards (Herbie Hancock, Frank Sinatra, Sonny Rollins, Gershwin, Duke Ellington, etc.) and I can also include super melodic pop artist like The Beatles and Elton John. This price is for up to 2 hrs. | $600 (USD) |
I can add my jazz combo to perform with me. Quartet for up to 2 hours at given price. | $925 (USD) |
I can add my jazz combo to perform with me. Trio (sax, bass, piano) for up to 2 hours at given price. | $725 (USD) |
John is the official solo saxophonist of the Denver Broncos and band leader of HomeSlice. He also enjoys spicing up cocktail hours with his solo saxophone music (or adding his bandmates to create jazz combos ranging from 2-5 members). He has experience playing wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, receptions, full stadiums, corporate parties, and knows how to energize a room. You will hear a variety of jazz standards mixed with some of pop music's biggest hits. John can also be a hired sax player to join bands needing that extra frosting on their music. If you are looking for a full band that has killer vocals and a powerful horns section playing your favorite hits that pack the dancefloor, you should check out HomeSlice. It is going to be a rare opportunity to book John when he isn't already playing for the Denver Broncos or his 9-piece band, HomeSlice, but it doesn't hurt to try.
I can play solo just through my saxophone that can project quite strongly when needed. I also own a battery powered PA system where I can use my wireless microphone on my saxophone , and can also even add backing tracks to what I am playing if that is desired.
I just need the name of the venue and where you want me setup. I will investigate load-in options, parking, etc.
I own a PA that I have used for many wedding ceremonies and cocktail hours. It is not the massive PA with powerful bass that my full band uses where all nine of us are hired to create a dance party. My PA is more for jazz and comfortable listening.
I play appropriate mp3 music through my PA when I am not playing saxopohone.
There have been a lot of special venues and concerts. If I had to pick one it would be getting to belt out a powerful sax solo on the 50 yard line of the Mile High Stadium for every home game just before kickoff. The Broncos Stampede would play "Let's Get it Started in Here" and let me put that Saturday Night Live kind of saxophone flavor all over while playing into a mic on the 50 yard line (I also just got to play sax in a commercial with Peyton Manning which was very cool). If not that, I would say one of the many incredible concerts with HomeSlice, or when I got to play with Flo Rida.
I love any event where people get energized listening to great music. It is an honor to be one of the musicians helping to fill the place with excitement and good times.
I was raised going to jam sessions with my father and a bunch of guitarists that just wanted me to play their songs by ear and cut loose on solos. Being forced to use my ear as a child was a great foundation to then extend through countless hours studying music theory and learning from the best in town.
My answer is not what song is the most impressive, but what song helped motivate me to become a saxophonist. That song is "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" by the Rolling Stones with Bobby Keys on saxophone.
Setup timing depends on if the PA is needed for the event. I give myself an hour to setup and provide some down time, and then I usually do my 1 hour set or two 50 minute sets.
I prefer to be sheltered from the sun and rain if outside.
I encourage clients to tell me what they are looking for the big picture and take a request. I will tailor my setlist to their preferences.
