About / Biography

The musical group SweetPan is all about Canadians playing the steel drum, 'pan', the only acoustic musical invention of the 20th century, & clearly a major Caribbean contribution to world culture. We specialize in Caribbean rhythms on the many different sizes of drum & have played for dances, weddings, corporate events, community events & interactive concerts since 1994. Our leader & arranger, Bernard Fernandes, draws on his vast repertoire & experience of the Caribbean to lend both an innovative & authentic touch!

Musical reptoire includes Caribbean, Reggae, Soca, Salsa, Pop and many others.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

Too many to mention, but one would be the Main Stage at the Caribbean Festival in North Vancouver. The park was full of people dancing and singing with us.

What's your favourite type of event?

All events are good, but Weddings are our favorite. The atmosphere is some thing special around a marriage.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Starting gigging after first learning the steel drum over 20 years ago. Several hundred of gigs later, still having fun!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Personally , Lord Kitchener of Trinidad was an amazing song writer and performer. Bernard Fernandes is also an amazing local artist contributing much to the steel drum scene for many years in Vancouver with his vast experience and talent.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We generally tale 30-60 minutes for most setups (depending on venue and number of performers).

Are you happy to perform outside?

Many of our events have been played outside. We just request a cover or tent to protect the performers, instruments and equipment from rain or hot sun.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We generally ask the client for music type (relaxed background or fun upbeat for example). Often weddings we do special requests.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Five-stars every time! We do a lot of repeat requests for annual events.
