Royston Skippers
Royston has had a passion for music since an early age as his father was a musician. He is self taught and has had limited formal training. His musical tastes include Latin, salsa, jazz, pop, R&B and our own cape jazz. He has many influences and is not restricted to his instrument only. His vocal ability has brought joy to many a lonely soul in the audiences he entertained. He is an easy going person and gets on well with people in general. He loves to explore new territories in life and music. Music excites him.
He started playing in a gospel band called Soul Seekers in 1976 and then Choice Band in 1985 for roughly fifteen years in total. He then joined up with a duo to form the band Flipside until 1997, doing corporate functions and club gigs, after which he went solo.
He has been performing, mostly as a soloist or duo in pubs and restaurants around Cape Town. Venues like Cock n’ tail, Vacca Matta, the Purple Onion and Mambo’s. He did year end functions for sport clubs and played at many weddings,birthdays and corporate functions over the years. He performed at the V&A Amphitheatre in the Waterfront with most of Cape Town’s music greats on stage in September 2005 for the Mercy Ships music festival. He received an offer to go to Dubai in October of 2005 and spent three months there at the le Royal Meridian with the Alternative band.
He played at the President Hotel as part of a trio for two and a half years. Thereafter he played at The River Club for three years and still does the occasional function there as well.
He has provided entertainment at The Willow Bridge Mall during December 2008 (3 days per week) and December 2009 – January 2010.
He has also provided entertainment at functions at both The Radisson and the Twelve Apostles Hotel during 2009.
He has been involved in compositions with artist like Allou April and for other artists. He has been involved in the administrative part of artist like the late Robbie Jansen and Allou April for approximately five years. He has also performed with both of them. He played at Inside Lounge doing sundowners. He has played at Sheffs vegetarian restaurant from February to May 2012 for a minimum of three nights a week and Monday to Friday doing the lunchtime gig. He played at Hollow on the square hotel in the heart of Cape Town doing their Christmas-eve dinner December 2011 and the sundowners gig on Thursdays for the month of April 2012. He has also done three functions at Neethlingshof wine estate in December 2011 and January and February 2012. He has performed for Moyos at Spier in Stellenbosch wine lands for their lunchtime jazz sessions in September and October 2012.He performed with Zane Adam at the 2012 switching on of lights festival for the city of cape town
He provided entertainment for the Baxter theatre for five days a week from December 2012 to present where he now performs random nights on request and availability. He also performed at Hout bay Manor Hotel’s new years eve dinner.
He has recorded his first cd project called “Made up my mind” which was released in February 2016. The title track won an Akademia award for best jazz song for unsigned artist in Los Angeles in April 2016. He has been at position number one 4 times locally as a reverb nation artist since beginning of the year with 4 songs on a mobile app for the same organisation. He has one of his tracks on a compilation cd for the argus newspaper.
On heritage day 2016 he Performed at the one world festival of healing in Paarl with many top artist on the bill and at the e’bosch festival in Stellenbosch on the same day.
He went on a month long tour of Durban with a female vocalist to perform at various clubs and pubs and restaurants.
