We had always assumed that her adoption had come through one of the Wichita or Winfield area maternity homes. However, when I looked up the history of adoption in the Kansas City area this evening, I learned that in the first half of the 1900s, Kansas City was known as the 'adoption hub of the US'. Families from all over the country put their daughters on trains and sent them there to give birth in one of a number of maternity homes, due to favorable adoption laws. This gives us a whole new avenue to pursue and a new state (Missouri) in which to search for her birth records! We're still not sure why she would have called her doll 'the brown doll' or what blue box she might have been talking about, but we're working on it!
